These seven highly symbolic, and strikingly powerful poems by seven Afghan female poets full of hope, defiance, and love open a panoramic window to their souls where dignity and elegance reside.
The memory of sun
by : Parvin Pegevak
Tr: Guity Novin
Had there been a star in the night
it would have been sufficient
for me to remind me of the sun,
and had the sky was covered by clouds,
thunder and lightening,
a drop of rain would have been sufficient
for me to remind me of the sun,
and if the rain had stopped
a moment of thirst
in search of water
in the painful springs
would have been sufficient
for me to remind me of the sun,
O Bleakness of the war!
how can you kill in me,
the memory of the sun.

I hawl.
By : Homa Mohtaseb-Zadeh Azar

From this empty space,
void of mirrors and springs,
inside a gloomy hut,
a treeless town,
drained of happiness and joy
I hawl.

The swarms of locusts in the garden
By: Leila Serahat Roshani
Tr: Guity Novin
They looted all stars from my city's nights,
They stolen them audaciously,
They let the swarms of locusts in the garden
They left the garden key in the hands of the dark night,
If any night had a daybreak, it was going to be too bloody,
and the sun's forehead in believing this became bitter and fully wrinkled.
For your eyes

For your eyes
must one connect
a thousand of yuletide nights
and then ponder deeply
on your gaze.

Unchaste
By : Karimeh Vida
Tr: Guity Novin
Neither that stone
that was thrown at me,
nor that whip
that landed on my back
did add to may pains
but
it was the stare of observers of the event
that injured me.
before reaching my body
NO!
How could I've been unchaste.
It was them who saw me unchaste.
The justice of winter
By: Alame'h Shahid Blkhi
Tr: Guity Novin
Break in your whole height, and fall freely on earth,
Alas O mirror! the doubt be away from your eyes,
Break! God be my witness, that in the city of silence and stone,
it's a long while that a cry is buried in my throat,
ّit's a long while that this injured, this wild tulip of my heart
is the most wondering leaf in the stubborn hands of wind
is this the justice of winter? I am complaining my friend!
We are tiered and sad, but those who are happy are night and chill
