Three Poems by Arthur Rimbaud

OUVRIERS
Workers
Oh that warm February morning! An untimely Southerly came and
stirred our absurd
indigent memories, our young wretchedness.
Henrika wore a cotton skirt in brown and
white check, , which
must have been fashionable last century, a bonnet with ribbons and a silk scarf.
It was much sadder than any grief. We were having a stroll in the suburbs.
The weather was overcast and that Southerly wind
excited all the vile odours of the ravaged gardens and dessicated meadows
This did not seem to bother my wife as much as me. In a puddle left by
last month’s floods on a path up there, she pointed out
some tiny little fish.
The town, with its smoke and noises of mills, followed us a long way
down the paths. Oh other world, habitat blessed by sky
and shadows! The Southerly wind reminded me of the wretched childhood events
, my summer’s despairs, the horrible
quantity of strength and knowledge that fate has always kept far
from me. No! we will not spend the summer in this avaricious land
where we shall never be anything but affianced orphans. I’d not want this hardened arm
to drag no more a cherished any longer
DÉPART
Assez vu.
!
DEPARTURE
Seen enough. The vision encountered under all skies.
Had enough. Murmur of cities, in the evening, and in the
sunshine, and always.
Known enough. The arrests in life. – O Rumours and
Visions
Departure into affection and noise anew
TO A REASON
A tap
of your finger on the drum discharges all sounds, and the
new harmony begins.
One step of yours is the rise of new men and their forward march.
Your head turns away: new love! Your head turns back, – new
love!
“Change our fates, confound the scourges, starting with time”,
these children sing to you. “Raise, from anywhere, the substance of our
fortunes and desires",” they beg .
Arrival from forever, you will go everywhere.
